The Secret to Getting Organized for a Move

I think we can all agree that moving totally SUCKS. It’s always more expensive, time consuming, and stressful than we imagine.

At the same time, it’s almost always worth the trouble to make that big move. We move for reasons hopeful and tragic, temporary and permanent. We might be moving for a new job, a new relationship, or a new perspective… or due to a financial setback, an ill relative, or a retreat to the comforts of home. But every time, we get something of a clean slate, a chance to remake our lives better than before.

So, how can we make moving easier?

There’s one single thing you can do to make your move take less of your precious time, money, and energy, and it’s this:

Get organized before you move!

I’ve seen firsthand that when it comes to moving, taking the time to get organized beforehand will pay huge dividends during the entire process. Packing takes less time, there’s less stuff to move, and unpacking is way less painful.

An empty home… ready for the new family to move in and begin the next chapter of their lives together.

Plus, you know those last few boxes that just have random junk shoved into them that you have no idea what to do with?  If you get organized before packing, those boxes won’t happen in the first place!

A few years ago, I worked with an adorable family who were moving from an apartment into their first home… and expecting their second child.  It was such an exciting time for them, and so fun to be a part of their major life transition.  In fact – the husband joked with me that I had become part of the family!

However… I wish they had called me sooner!  We only had time for a couple of organizing sessions in their old place.  We got a lot done, but I could have helped make their transition even smoother if I had had the opportunity to go through all the spaces in the old apartment before the movers came.

Don’t get me wrong – they ended up with a beautifully custom organized home at the end of it all!  But because we weren’t able to spend more time on the front end, they moved more stuff than they needed to and then found themselves in the position of making keep/toss decisions at the same time as we were making placement and organizational decisions.  The move was a more complex and overwhelming process than it needed to be, and I was glad I was there to streamline it for them!
